Spring Bucket List: make a strawberry dessert

Spring Bucket List: make a strawberry dessert
One more done on our bucket list! I shared the last items on our list with Aria and she picked strawberry dessert to accomplish next. We scrolled through various strawberry desserts and then ended right back at our favorite - strawberry pretzel salad. When you find a winner you stick with it, yes? We made it, we ate it, we enjoyed it. A tasty check for our list!

Spring Bucket List: go to gatorland

Sweet Turtle Soup - Spring Bucket List: go to gatorland
We are chugging along with our spring bucket list so far! When I saw that Gatorland was running a Florida discount this spring I knew it had to make it on to our list. I went once when I was little, but remember nothing, so it was about time we made a trip. It's a very Florida thing to do, yes?

I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it was going to be just a bunch of gators in water with a few snakes thrown in for good measure. But, it had a ton of things to see and do. I was impressed. All sorts of neat critters including a super fluffy and adorable blonde raccoon, a train ride, a huge water play area for kids, little gators, big gators, gigantic gators, white gators, shows, etc. We had terrible timing with the shows, and the train needed maintenance right before our ride but we still managed to spend several hours checking everything out.

I actually have a picture (somewhere...) of me holding a baby gator when I went as a kid. So, I was really hoping they still did something like that so I could get a picture of Aria holding a baby gator too. If my memory serves me well, the baby gator I was holding was a legit baby gator...just a little thing. When we found the stand where you can take a picture with a gator I was a little thrown off by the size of their 'baby' gator. More like teenage gator?! But we were able to get a family picture with not only teenage gator but also with a snake. Double the fun I guess? Aria wasn't intimidated in the least, and I love that she draped her arm around our gator friend - ha. He was super cute though, and his tummy was very soft.

Another fun addition is that you can feed the gators overpriced hot dogs. We also saw the gator wrestling, fed goats ice cream cones, thought the white gators were awesome looking, heard some male gators making very odd sounds in the mating swamp, and then let Aria get completely soaked even though I didn't bring her bathing suit. It was a great time, but a hot time. We will definitely be back again sometime - perhaps in the cooler months, or again next year for the Florida discount!

The best part about a monthly 10 bucks at Target trip is letting dad take over the kid duties so I can wander around. Esp with a frappuccino in hand. It's the little luxuries. I spotted the weekly memo pad in the dollar spot and thought it would be a fun organizational tool even though I have a big ol' planner. Although, I might save it for next year and forego the big ol' planner. Undecided. Aria found the little black mini bucket and tossed it in the cart for herself before heading off to the toy aisle with dad. I meandered back to the gardening section and wished it was full of holiday decorations instead, but the pumpkin seeds caught my eye. I've always wanted to grow a pumpkin, it's perfectly in sync with my love of Halloween, so I decided to grab it. Then I saw that tanks were on sale too! I grabbed one of my favorites in a different color and was set with my 10.

But, did I keep it under $10 this time?

Absolutely did! My very first time. Mission accomplished.

The Picture Perfect Project: 12 in 2016 - May

12 in 2016 a photo challenge, one photo a month in 2016
"Singing in the Rain"

Welcome back to another month of the Picture Perfect Project. I am joining up with Beth of Our Pretty Little Girls, Whitney of Work it Mommy, Stephanie of Wife Mommy Me, Elizabeth of Chasin' Mason, and Desiree of Macke Monologues to encourage you to challenge yourself in 2016 to take pictures daily, monthly, weekly, or any combination under the sun. And, then link-up with us on the 2nd Thursday of each month to share your progress. Challenges are always more fun when you do them with friends.

My challenge is "12 in 2016" - taking a photo of Aria once a month all year. Not just any picture (because I can usually be found behind my camera) but a picture where Aria is both looking in my direction and with a genuine smile. Some months are more successful than others but the only picture you regret is the one you don't take.

We woke up to pouring rain the other morning and Aria couldn't wait to get out in it. I just love some of the images I captured. Watching her joy in the simple act of playing in the rain fills my heart up. A great way to start the day, followed by some hot cocoa because Aria was a frozen popsicle by the time she came back inside.

Please link-up any photography challenge you've been working on this year below! The link-up will be open until the end of the month, so add your link anytime between now and then. You can also share your pictures on instagram or twitter using #thepictureperfectproject. And, don't forget the next link up is on June 9th.

Spring Bucket List: have an ice cream date

Sweet Turtle Soup - Spring Bucket List: have an ice cream date
We checked off another item from our Spring Bucket List - a mother's day ice cream date! I wanted to try out Beaches & Cream Soda Shop, a tiny ice cream shop at Disney's Beach Club Resort. So, we made an afternoon out of it. We explored both the Beach Club and the Yacht Club, two different resorts but right next to each other. Beaches & Cream has food as well as ice cream, but I wanted to eat at the Crew's Cup lounge instead, on the Yacht Club side of the resort area. So, we stopped in for lunch to try their truffle fries - we all hated them. Such a powerful flavor, but not at all to our liking. The rest of our lunch was good though.

We had some time to kill before our reservation so we headed into the arcade, which was conveniently located right next door to Beaches & Cream. I think it was the highlight for Aria. She had a blast trying out all the different games, and didn't even want to leave when our reservation time popped up. Who knew she would like arcade games better than ice cream?

We talked her into heading over for our ice cream date though. Super cute little ice cream shop - right out of the 50s with pastels and even a juke box playing oldies. We hadn't planned on ordering the infamous 'kitchen sink' - multiple scoops of every ice cream flavor plus every topping they offer plus a huge pile of cherries on top. I was leaning towards a nice modest brownie sundae, Aria wanted strawberry ice cream, but Chris thought go big or go home. So, we ordered the kitchen sink. Sirens and lights go off when they bring it to your table, it is quite the experience. We ate and ate and then ate some more, but in the end the kitchen sink won.

Was it fun? Absolutely! Would I order it again? Only with at least twice as many mouths! Was it a memorable Mother's Day? Indeed!

Teaching Together Blog Hop #8

Hey, everybody! Welcome to the Teaching Together Blog Hop. I, together with Whitney at Work it Mommy, Amanda at Tickled Pink, Courtney at A+ Life, and Beth at Our Pretty Little Girls, thought that a link up focusing on preschool activities, homeschooling ideas, and play at home learning would be a great way to pool together all sorts of fun and educational resources. A place to share and be inspired. Check back on the original post for full details, and/or past blog hops for great ideas!

Sweet Turtle Soup - Mother's Day Hand Print Flower Bouquet canvas

Mother's Day is this Sunday, so I thought I'd share the canvas Aria made for the occasion! If you've seen my A through M, and N through Z Hand & Foot Print Animal ABCs, then you know I absolutely adore anything hand and foot print art related. Aria and I have been slowly working our way through all the holidays and special event type days, making canvases for the occasion. Our most recent addition is this Mother's Day hand print flower bouquet!

The best part is how simple it is to make!

All you need:
- a canvas, nothing too large (I think ours are 10x10)
- finger paint (we use crayola)
- a large paint brush to paint tiny hands
- a little paint brush for the stems

Start by painting tiny hands with flowery paint colors and stamping the canvas towards the top. You can do a few or a bunch, Aria wanted to do a bunch. You can wipe the tiny hands clean between each color or just add the new paint color on top of the residue. We just added paint without cleaning in between stamps, and I think it added pretty pops of multiple colors to the hand flowers. Either way works!

Let the hand flowers dry. Then paint a few green stems. Let those dry, and then add a bow. I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination so I like to keep it as simple as possible. You could also paint them coming out of a flower pot, and/or add a Happy Mother's Day somewhere. Or, instead of a bunch you could paint a row of flower hands and make a garden. If you have more than one kid you could do the garden idea with a hand from each and add their names by their flowers. You can't go wrong with hand flowers for mom!

Here is a peek at all the other holiday canvases we've made over the years as well, most of them are hand and foot print art. The very first one we did was ghost feet for Aria's first Halloween! The leaves are potato leaf prints for the first day of fall, and the butterfly is for the first day of spring. The 4th of July fireworks are from a few straws taped together to make a firework stamp. We've still got a few holidays to go!

Spring Bucket List: try geocaching

Sweet Turtle Soup - Spring Bucket List: try geocaching

Another check for our Spring Bucket List. We tried our hand at geocaching over the weekend. We signed up at geocaching.com, downloaded the app, and headed out to find treasure. The first one took us a good bit to find. We felt like fish out of water - not sure where to look or how to open up the clues on the app. But, we finally figured it out and spotted the first cache in a bush. After that we found cache after cache until we were too hot to go on. It was a lot of fun, and I think Chris had the most fun. Aria was pretty middling about the whole thing. She wasn't super interested in hunting, and then she lost interest because it was so meltingly hot. We will either have to go early or later in the day, or wait until winter strikes again. I think if it wasn't so gross outside she'd enjoy the experience a bit more, but even so it was an enjoyable family outing. I would definitely recommend you give it a try in your area, but hopefully when it is not as hot.

p.s. Don't forget to bring a few treasures to add to the cache and a pen to sign your name to the log!
