Counting Down to Christmas: Days 10 to 17

For Days 1 to 9 click here!

Cannot believe how fast December is rushing past. Here is how we've spent the past week counting down to the BIG day...
Sweet Turtle Soup - Counting Down to Christmas: Days 10 to 17
Book number ten was Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree, which Aria seemed to enjoy especially all the animals. We opened it at lunch so that dad could be there for it, he was missing out on the book openings with all the overtime he has been working this month.

Our activity for the tenth day was a reindeer craft. I officially suck at peeling off sticker backs and Aria had a heck of a time trying to put the stickers on the reindeer and not herself, but she loves her reindeer on the tree!

I just asked her the other night if she wanted to put cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve, and she said no. Then I asked her if she wanted to put out carrots for the reindeer, and she got pretty excited about that. So, reindeer trump Santa in her book.

Book number eleven was Snowmen at Christmas, which she loved because she is a big fan of 'snowmans' and thought the snowdog was hilarious.

Our activity for the eleventh day was salt dough ornaments! She even got to bust out her Birthday apron.

I managed to mess the whole thing up and they all cracked. Too thick perhaps? Aria enjoyed mixing and rolling and tasting (yuck) and mushing so it wasn't a total wash.

Book number twelve was Christmas Magic, which was a really sweet story. Aria and I both enjoyed it, especially the lovely illustrations.

Time for a treat. Notice the other broken tissue paper above, another sneaky attempt at stealing extra treats.

Our activity for the twelfth day was eggnog muffins. Aria loves to help, and taste test everything including plain flour. She also blows on everything for some reason. So we'll pour in an ingredient and then she blows on it.

The recipe called for a glaze but I always skip that step because I'm lazy, but I think these would have been a lot better with a glaze or a sugar top. As is they were just okay. I sent them all off to work with Chris - Christmas spirit, eh. Merry Christmas, have some mediocre muffins.

Book number thirteen was The Twelve Days of Christmas, which is one of my favourite Christmas books. I love all the details on each page, and there are a ton of things to point out and find.

Our activity for the thirteenth day was a trip to watch the Light Parade, which conveniently marched by one road over from our house so we only had to walk down the way to see it.

It was cold as sin for us Floridians, so I was glad I thought to bring my winter coat with me and a blanket for Aria. We were toasty enough. Everybody else froze though.

Aria's favourite bits were when a bunch of horses pranced on past, and also yelling 'merry christmas' and clapping/waving at everybody.

Book number fourteen was The Spirit of Christmas, which I was super excited about because we are big fans of Nancy Tillman but both the story and the illustrations weren't as top notch as usual. It was close, but no cigar.

Our activity for the fourteenth day was shaving cream Santa beards, which was a real winner. Clearly. Aria loved it. I meant to use redi whip for Aria's beard but forgot in the moment. I think she may be scarred for life now. Um, Ho Ho Ho?

Book number fifteen was Clifford's Christmas, which again was a hit. She is a total Clifford lover. Just like dad. Oddly enough I heard that Norman Bridwell passed away that day. I think he actually passed on Friday, but what a sad coincidence that the day I heard about it was the day Aria opened up another Clifford book. Or, just a bittersweet reminder that his creation still lives on.

Our activity for the fifteenth day was a Christmas tree mini photo session. She's rocking around the Christmas tree in this one.

Book number sixteen was The Animals' Christmas Eve, which is another hit. Anything with animals is usually a success with Aria.

Our activity for the sixteenth day was postponed so instead I watched The Family Stone, one of my fave Christmas movies, in bed after Aria went to sleep, and then started on my Mommy & Me Book Exchange book - I Capture the Castle, which grabbed me right away. A lazy mostly computer free evening was just the ticket, plus I went to bed early.

Book number seventeen was Dream Snow, which prompted many pig snorts from Aria. She just kept going and going and going, I was cracking up at her enthusiasm. She thought the rooster was a turkey, so we worked on 'doodle-doo'. Animal sounds are one of my favourite things to teach Aria.

Showing off her two treats - one a Hershey's hug and the other a Dove peppermint bark bite. I usually let Aria have the hug and then we split the peppermint bark one.

Our activity for the seventeenth day was Christmas toes! Since I'm out of red...gasp, we went with green and sparkles.

  2. Oh my goodness, you guys are having way too much fun. I looooove it! You are the best mom (and wife!)
We painted toes this week as well! I got red and Mia got gold sparkles... I didn't trust my hand with red on her wiggly toes, but then to my surprise, Mia held perfectly still the whole time I painted AND while they dried! She loves this girly stuff!!

  3. So much fun! The eggnog muffins sounded sounded so good until I read the review lol. Maybe with the glaze they'd be better. Shaving cream beards, bahaha. That light parade looks pretty impressive and green toes, YES! So much fun!

  8. The Santa beards...too funny! I am definitely stealing your advent calendar idea for next year. I love the wooden house ones, but they're so expensive...hoping they go on sale after Christmas. Ez is a huge fan of reindeer too. I don't think he understands Santa at all though. Reindeer are much cuter anyway. And 12 Days of Christmas is my fave book too! I used to have one of those search and find versions, definitely want to find that for Ez for next year. Love seeing all your Christmas books, giving me lots of good ideas for next year, since apparently the library by our house is closed for the next two weeks...boo!

  9. I may have read the answer to these questions before and just forget but... where do you get your books from? I know they are available in every book store/super store/Amazon but do you have a secret in getting them for cheap? I love the idea of giving books and I did it last year but I was wondering if there is a way to do it and not spend too much.

  12. You guys have so much fun! I am so jealous! It's a good thing Mason can't read because if he knew how much fun you guys were having, I would be in trouble. I absolutely love that you do a craft/activity a day along with your books!

  16. You are always doing the most awesome stuff for all the holidays.
Your holiday book collection is amazing! There are so many that I haven't heard/seen before. The 12 Days of Christmas reminds me of those Eye Spy books. Does Aria have any of those? Marcus LOVES those kind of books.
The Santa beards. Clearly a success. It's like a Santa fail photo. But maybe even a little bit better. :)
