A Day in the Life - Summer edition

Our Day: July 21st, 2014 - Aria is 19 months

7:45 am | My alarm goes off. I wake up by fiddling around on my phone: checking emails, scrolling through IG, and popping on to facebook. Usually I am also half dozing off and waking back up with a start when my screen goes black in front of me. I hate mornings.

8:21 am | Aria wakes up, so I go in for her. Her new thing is to tell me to sit down while she bobs around her crib. If I get up to go pick her up she runs to the far side. We hang out this way for a few minutes before I can nab her for a new diaper.

After a clean diaper she trots into my bedroom, where she usually shouts for 'da'. I tell her dad is at work so we feed the dogs. She grabs each bowl and sits down on the floor before I hand her the cup of dog food to pour in. She is getting pretty good aim too.

We leave the dogs to their munching and go grab a morning milk.

8:40 am | I sat down in the rocking chair in the living room and Lizzy wanders over to me for a butt scratch, and I get a waft of stinky dog. So, I decide to give her a bath. The sun hasn't hit the porch yet so it won't be too gross out. A few minutes into her bath I decide that since I'm already being so productive I should probably go ahead and start recording a day in the life, which is the reason for the lack of pictures thus far and the absence of precise times.

8:59 am | Lizzy is freshly bathed and somewhat dry. I tell Aria to go finish drying Lizzy off. Lizzy gets into the drying off process and knocks Aria on her tush at least three times, which makes her laugh. She even ended up with a paw to the face, so I guess drying off is a little more intense than I realized.

9:04 am | I give my email a quick check while Aria pulls out some completely unused VHS in the cabinet.

9:04 am | Clearly the emails were quick to read. I decide to make a smoothie for breakfast. Three quarters of the way through I realize we don't have enough OJ, so I top it off with apple juice. It was very sweet, but tasted like fall so that was an interesting new take for us.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
9:23 - 9:43 am | We eat our breakfast. Aria got her smoothie plus a raisin bagel, which is her favourite kind (ick). Aria has just learned how to cheers, and is semi obsessed with it. I just slowly sip on my smoothie. She let's me know when she is 'all done'.

9:43 - 9:50 am | I clean up breakfast and take care of the dishwasher. Aria helps put away her high chair, and then plays with stickers.

9:50 am | I get dressed and sort our laundry into 'baby' and 'adult' piles.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
9:58 am | Aria is still happily playing with stickers so I fold the 'adult' pile.

10:02 am | I change Aria's diaper and she picks out an outfit to wear. I love that she picks out her outfits now. Today she went with her pink and orange romper.

10:09 am | I dragged in the 'baby' pile of laundry to Aria's nursery so I fold that up while she entertains herself looking out the window and then playing with the moose rocker.

10:19 am | I wander around aimlessly until I remember I need to put the newly washed rug back in the bathroom. That kills a whole 5 minutes.

10:24 am | I get down on the floor and play with Aria. We sit monkey on the stool, play with Noah's Ark, sort shapes, and read all the books.

10:38 am | Baxter watches.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
10:39 am | We read more books. I ask Aria if she wants to take a selfie with mommy, so she runs away and climbs up into the glider to look out the window.

10:48 am | She still won't take a selfie with me so I try to talk her into it by taking one with Baxter, who also won't cooperate.

10:49 am | I guess it worked. mwahaha
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
10:53 am | We go brush teeth, and then Aria examines her feet in the rocking chair. She usually has dog hair on them, because no matter how recently I just vacuumed there is always dog hair, and asks us to brush them off for her.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
10:59 am | I check my email. I love reading the emails.

11:00 am | I go looking for something to feed Chris for lunch. I got sidetracked and ended up cleaning out all the no longer edible leftovers. But, found still good leftovers to have for lunch too. I even found more than I thought we had left so I got to eat some too. Cottage pie, yum. I pop it in the oven, because I am kind of anti-microwave. Aria helped out by wiping my foot off.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
11:12 am | I turn QVC on to see if there is a Christmas in July show going on. Sadly no, but they were presenting a cute purse. Aria wanted me to hold her so we watched a few minutes. She rested her head on my shoulder, and that can't be resisted.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
11:22 am | I switched a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer that I put in at some point in time over the course of the morning. I didn't notate it, so I have absolutely no recollection. I filled up the dishwasher and turned it on too. Aria watched out the window for Chris.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
11:34 am | Chris pulls up in the driveway.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
11:36 am | Aria takes advantage of the extra commotion to run into the bedroom and eat some cat food.

11:37 am | We eat lunch. Aria prefers the cat food. Lizzy decides it is too hot outside for basking in the sun.

11:47 am | Chris heads back to work. Aria and I wave him off and then finish our lunch. We like to luncheon leisurely.

11:59 am | I start to clean up and give Aria the rest of her morning smoothie. I fill up the cup she uses for smoothies all the way, but it takes her all day to finish it off. After she drinks what she wants I put the rest back in the refrigerator and clean her up.

12:06 pm | Aria helps me straighten up the living room before nap time.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
12:09 pm | Then we head to her room for a fresh diaper, a comfy outfit to nap in, and some swaying with mom. I love those few minutes of her resting her head on my shoulder. I usually sing her some songs, normally Christmas carols because those are songs I know the words to. Sometimes she will sign for 'one more' and then 'one more' and 'one more'. Sometimes if I ask her if she ready to lay down she will grab on to my arms and cinch her legs tighter around my waist. Again, how can I resist that? So we sway and dance around her room until she is ready to lay down. I blow her kisses on the way out and give her a wave, sometimes she will wave back too.

12:14 pm | I close the door to Aria's room, and I hear the dryer beep. I go put it on for another tumble because I don't feel like taking it out yet. Then I dump and refill the ice cube trays, and then make myself an iced coffee with lots of crushed iced.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
12:22 pm | I grab my laptop and head to the couch for sitting. I read a few blogs before making myself redo my blog labels. I have approximately 2 billion, but I also end up messing up several old posts and having to go fix those too. rawr.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
12:44 pm | I feel like I'm being watched...
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
12:49 pm | I still hear Aria banging her legs against the side of the crib, so I go back into her room to sway with her for another minute and tell her that it is time for a nap to recharge. It is kind of rare for me to ever have to go back in to her room, and she wasn't making any noise apart from feet banging so I suppose I didn't have to anyway. I just felt like going in and giving her a hug. I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs. It is just a quick visit but she quiets down and falls asleep soon thereafter.

1:12 pm | It starts to rain.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
2:10 pm | I can no longer look at old posts or labels so I check and respond to some emails.

2:14 pm | I take a break from the lap top to remove my old chipped nail polish, and then I get back to emails and read a few more blogs. Hi, Loki.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
3:09 pm | Aria wakes up. I go in and get her, and then give her her milk. I call Lizzy over for a petting, since she feels all shiny and clean. Aria comes over to examine her ears and pat her head too.

3:23 pm | We do the funky chicken dance.

3:26 pm | Aria climbs up onto a dining room chair, while I tell her not to or at least to sit down. I plop her back to the floor so she goes and plays in the hot pads that are stored under the convection oven.

3:39 pm | I laid down on the floor to take a picture of Aria so she crawls over to me and flops on her belly too. She is so close I can't see the screen on my camera so I just take a couple blind shots. I missed all but this one.

3:47 pm | Aria attacks the see and say. Pulling the handle once is for wimps. We do all the animals sounds and signs she knows. I'm working on turkey and gobble gobble. Hopefully she'll have it down for Thanksgiving this year!

4:00 pm | Dad pulls in the driveway.

4:04 pm | We eat way too many chocolate covered potato chips. They are wonderful.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
4:15 pm | I scroll through IG while sitting on the couch with the gang watching Barefoot Contessa. She made fried chicken, and then ate it with a fork? That is not how you do it! Baxter came over to give kisses too, Aria loves beagle kisses!
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
4:23 pm | Aria thought Barefoot Contessa was boring so she flipped through her books.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
4:30 pm | Chris is reading Deborah Harkness' The Book of Life. I talked him into reading the first one when Aria was born and we spent all our time snuggling a newborn and reading books. He loved it. As soon as I finished it he started in on it. Since he wanted to read before dinner, Aria and I went into the bedroom and I let her watch one of our Disney vimeos while I read a few blog posts.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
4:58 pm | The vimeo ended so we came back out to the living room and I gave Aria a container full of paper straws to play with. That entertained her for a while. I think I finally rounded them all up again too. Pretty sure they were multiplying under the couch.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
5:35 pm | We went outside with the dogs, and I gave Aria another go at her bottomless smoothie.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
5:50 pm | I gave up on making anything for dinner because I was still so full of potato chips, so I just threw something together for Aria

6:13 pm | Dinner time. Chris was still reading so Aria and I munched on apples.
Sweet Turtle Soup: A Day in the Life - summer edition
6:31 pm | Aria and I hopped in the shower.

6:51 pm | I got Aria ready for bed.

7:00 - 7:48 pm | I read Harry Potter to Chris and Aria. Aria got into whatever trouble she could find, the normal. She is very into climbing up her changing table lately. After a chapter or so and some mom swaying plus lots of dad kisses, we put Aria to bed.

7:48 pm | Chris went back to work. When he has to work overtime he prefers to come home and spend a few hours with Aria before finishing up his hours after she goes to bed. I clean up the living room, and finish any dishes for the evening before heading to my room to watch movies and usually blog.

8:07 pm | I put 'Bring it On' on and crawl into bed. Classic.

9:49 pm | Next I put in 'Chocolate'. One of my faves.

10:46 pm | Chris gets home again.

After 'Chocolate' is over, Chris gets ready for bed and then we put in Star Wars for a few minutes before we fall asleep. I didn't note the time we finally made it to bed, but it was past midnight. When Chris works his second shift hours he doesn't want to just come home and go to sleep, and I don't really want to go to sleep alone so I stay up until he is ready. We like to watch a series together in bed, and it will takes us days to finish up a movie because we only last so long before Chris is snoring. I usually will be half awake until Chris falls asleep and then I turn off the movie and TV, and pass out 10 seconds later.

The end!

  1. Oh I love DITL posts but man they exhaust me! You know as I'm sitting on my butt during nap time reading it! I love that Chris is able to (and does) come home for a few hours to see u guys and then goes back to work. Super sweet. I love his 14min lunch break too! Kinda impressed u can blog and Aria sits next to you. I can only blog on my phone -- Callie is just too fascinated with the laptop. And she'll drink a smoothie all day long? Callie won't touch it after she's done with one. So i've just started making hers smaller and smaller. :) and way to be productive about bathing the dog. I should but I don't feel like it so probably won't happen today haha

  2. I love this post!!! I need to do one similar so I can recap how uneventful my days are.. haha!

  3. OMG!!! I thought we were the ONLY people with VHS tapes and a player still!!!!!!! We are totally meant to be besties! Also, is that corn in ya'lls smoothie? Is Cottage Pie the same thing as Sheperd's Pie?

  4. First of all, you are AMAZING at remembering to take photos on your DITL posts!
Second, 7:45am ALARM??? I WISH. So insanely jealous. Can you say 5am, snooze, snooze, up at 5:18am?
Also, love the selfie taking footage. And poor you, the dog even looked away (sorry to admit this but I actually kinda giggled and felt bad at the same time).
And Mason loves to read while I change his diaper too! And then throw his book behind the changing table never to be found again...

  5. Your day reminds me so much of when my oldest was a toddler and my only child - such sweet, sweet days those were! :)

  6. Whew-a busy day! I love reading the day in the life of posts! I documented a day in the life this week but have yet to write up the post!

  7. I find these types of posts fascinating. I'm always so curious as to the life of a stay at home mom. I love that you only sing Christmas carols. I love that you are reading her Harry Potter! And I had a bunch of other things to say too but forgot by the time I got here. So much goodness.

  8. Marcus insists I sit and wait near his crib until he is fully ready to get out, too! What's the deal with that?
Aria picks out her outfits? That might be the cutest thing I've heard all week.
And, so sweet that Chris comes home before Aria goes to bed before he finishes up work. Husband/Daddy of the Year!!

  9. I'm impressed that Aria lets the dogs eat after she feeds them...Wyatt likes to try and torment Angel. ;) Love how flexible Chris's schedule is, that's so nice! Sounds like a great day!

  10. It's crazy how much Reese and Aria are alike in what they like to do. And I'm jealous of the sleeping. Bedtime is 7:30, but she usually doesn't fall asleep until after 8, unless we rock her to sleep. Then we have to wake her no later than 6:15, so not enough sleep :( Plus, her naps lately have only been 1.5 hrs instead of 2.5-3, so yeah... not fun. And very impressed with your notes! I'd like to do one of these at some point, but I know they're a lot of work, and I'm always behind on blogging.

  11. This reminds me so much of my life when my oldest daughter was that age. It was exhausting to find things to keep her entertained all day but there were a lot of sweet moments.

Thanks for participating again this quarter!

  12. Oh my goodness, you did such a better job at documenting your day than I did! I kept forgetting that's what I was supposed to be doing, so I don't think I have nearly enough photos!

  13. Lol... Christmas carols seriously are the easiest songs for me to remember too. And now I really want some chocolate covered potato chips.

  14. Thanks for sharing your day! I just can't get over what a sweet, sweet face Aria has. She is seriously the cutest.

And, cottage pie for lunch? What is that exactly? I've never heard of it!

  15. OMG I can't even imagine having to set my alarm to wake up, lol! That's amazing that she sleeps so late. Maybe someday ONE of my kids will do that, ha!
Aria is such a little doll, so cute :) Love her little smoothie cup too!
Just out of curiosity, what do you put in the door shoe rack?

  16. Clicking over from DITL link-up....

Your daughter is so cute! My daughter has the same crab outfit and she will start to wear it any day now!

Where did you find chocolate covered potato chips? I'm intrigued....

  17. Cute little face!

So nice that your husband can come home periodically through the day...it's nice that he can shift his hours a little to still be able to see you guys a little (I suppose that's the silver lining in having to work so many hours).

    Chocolate covered potato chips...yum!
